A south-facing bedroom that holds the day’s heat until midnight is more than a summer annoyance. It affects sleep, concentration and how usable your home feels. Knowing how to cool flats starts with recognising the limits of the building itself: restricted opening windows, shared freeholds, conservation rules and no sensible location for a conventional outdoor condenser.
For many flat owners and landlords, the answer is not simply to buy the biggest portable unit available. A better result comes from reducing unwanted heat, managing airflow and choosing a permanent cooling system that suits the property and its permissions.
Start by reducing heat before it enters
Cooling works best when the flat is not continually gaining heat. This is particularly relevant in top-floor homes, loft conversions and rooms with large areas of glazing. Once walls, floors and furnishings have absorbed several hours of direct sun, even a powerful air conditioner has more work to do.
Keep blinds, curtains or shutters closed on the sun-facing side of the flat during the hottest part of the day.
